About Valley View Farm

It's more than just a farm, it's our home and market garden where we believe that honouring every step of production—from nourishing the soil to harvesting at peak ripeness—ensures that we provide the highest-quality produce to our community that we are also proud to eat ourselves.

Sustainably Produced and Pesticide Free

We strongly believe that promoting an ecological balance is key to ensuring the long-term productivity of the soil. The use of artificial chemical-based fertilizers, herbicides, and pesticides results in imbalances that disrupt natural systems, reduce productivity, and negatively impact resilience. Ultimately we are just visitors here and by being ecologically minded stewards, we can ensure the soil is healthy and productive for generations to come.

Biointensive Methods meet Regenerative Principles

We integrate biointensive methods for high-yield, small-scale production with regenerative principles to improve soil health and biodiversity. We implement practices such as permanent raised beds, no-till, crop rotation, and use on-farm produced compost to improve soil structure, nutrient cycling, and the soil's microbiome. We focus on creating more sustainable, resilient food systems by reducing reliance on external inputs and maximizing output from a small land area.

After living in the suburbs of Victoria for over 30 years, we started to think about what the next 30 years might look like.

We also started thinking about what kind of environment we wanted our young daughter to grow up in. With one of us having been a passionate backyard gardener for over 20 years and the other one loving to make homemade pickles, salsas, jams, and jellies, starting a small farm was the perfect way to scale up our complementary passions, while at the same time giving our daughter a different kind of education to complement her formal schooling.

So we sold our house in Gordon Head and moved to Saanichton and while it has been a lot of hard work, it has also been an incredibly rewarding experience for the whole family. We have met some amazing people who are passionate about supporting and buying local sustainably produced food and we are happy to provide them with high-quality fruits and vegetables at affordable prices.

It is said that to have a happy and healthy retirement you should keep busy, stay active, and stay social. While we are not quite ready to retire from our day jobs yet, we cannot think of a better way than running Valley View Farm to keep us sharp, healthy, and involved in our community.
